I get knocked down…

So, things ended on a bit of a low just before I went on holiday a few weeks ago. The second run at an MOT ended in disaster. But my optimism was quickly restored and before I left, I posted some parts off to people for help. One of those parts has come back sorted, albeit in need of reassembly. That’s the Battery Management System, … Continue reading I get knocked down…

Keeping the EV cool

After I posted about my MOT woes on the Open Inverter forum, the ever-helpful Damien Maguire chipped in. It seems my occasional loss of torque may be related to a temperature issue with the Prius Gen 3 inverter. Damien, who runs this setup in his E39, has found that this inverter needs serious coolant flow to keep it cool. Without this, the remaining Toyota brain … Continue reading Keeping the EV cool

Engine mounts and more

Right, refreshed after a week off and time for a bit of an update. Test-fit After the last update I did indeed get the motor and gearbox into the car where they remain now. It wasn’t as hard as I expected and it all slotted in beautifully as you can see from the pics below. A bit of 2×4 was used to level it up … Continue reading Engine mounts and more

Making the adaptor plate

Another week or so of big progress. Tomorrow (sore muscles permitting) I will test fit the motor and gearbox for the first time. Adaptor Plate Over the last week my daughter and I have measured and drilled the holes in the two halves of the adaptor plate (marking them out with a transfer punch), bolted them up to the motor and gearbox respectively, welded on … Continue reading Making the adaptor plate

Do YouTube channels have seasons? They do now. I'm ready for a holiday, and with the major work finished on the upgrades to my BMW Z3 electric car conversion, it feels like a good time to call this the end of Season One of EV DIY.

So what can we tick off the to-do list? And more importantly, what's next? In this video I lay out the plans for Season Two, kicking off in September 2022.
Four key categories of work to do/content for the channel.
1: More mechanical upgrades to 'the 300', my first EV-swapped Z3. Finish and test the new motor upgrade, get it ready for its MOT (annual road worthiness test here in the UK - due in September), and fill in some of the missing features like gauges and heating.
2. Z300S body kit and interior. I've been sat on the retro barchetta-style body for the Z3 for months now while I finish the mechanical upgrades. Now I need to get it transferred over. That's going to mean a lot of fibreglass work, wiring, and paint prep. And some interior transformations: custom centre console, new seats and more.
3. The EVGT. My plan was always to have two cars so that one can be off the road for upgrades while I drive the other. This will also be a body conversion project, but this time to a hard-top GT body, also in retro style. I have an electric drivetrain and the base car for the second project, but is it too rotten to use? It's certainly a lot of work to make it safe again, so I have a decision to make if I want to accelerate the GT project. Crack on and weld-up the rotten sills? Or break this car for parts and buy something more solid?
4. Workshop upgrades. The shed needs some love. It's a mess and it's hard to keep tidy because of a lack of storage. The toilet door doesn't shut, there are a few leaks, and there isn't enough light. Plus I'd like to add a few electronic/home automation luxuries around the place. If I'm going to spend so much time here, I want it to be the shed of dreams!
Plus of course I'll be recording some more episodes of DIY EV Chat. All that means lots of content to come on the channel in Season Two...and beyond. If that's your sort of thing, please do subscribe and follow along.

It's all back together! Well, mostly. My EV-swapped BMW Z3 now has its bigger motor, cleaner engine bay layout, new cooling system, larger junction box (ready for a second battery pack) and a bunch of other little upgrades.

In this episode I fit the radiator and finish up the plumbing, complete the 12V wiring, put the front end back together and start testing. And I get some help from fellow DIY EVer, Chris, all the way from Australia.

Big thanks to Chris and his brother for coming to visit, helping out, and bringing lunch - always welcome!

Are you ready for this car to be back on the road yet? I am. I probably bit off too much with these upgrades to my electric car conversion. But it will all be worth it in the end.

In this episode I continue to rewire the car, sorting out all the signal lines to the high voltage junction box and generally progressing towards getting the car back on the road with its new motor.
