DIY EV

All pictures, no words: update

Can’t believe it has been three months since I posted on here. But that’s what happens when you get sucked into making videos. Continue reading All pictures, no words: update

After last episode's disaster it's time for...well, more disasters. Or more accurately, more stupidity on my part. Learn why things didn't fit last time around. And for a bit more cheer, I stick lots of the other bits in the engine bay and check whether that all still fits now that the motor is shunted forward...

If you're new to this channel, I'm not always this stupid. I'm upgrading my EV-swapped BMW Z3 to have a little more power, replacing the small Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV front motor/generator with the one from the rear axle.

Make sure to subscribe if you want to see it all come together, or just to continue to laugh at my failures.
It's in! Well, sort of. Fitting a bigger motor to my electric car conversion

Finally, it's time to get the bigger Mitsubishi Outlander motor into my EV-swapped BMW Z3. In this episode the final parts of the old conversion are removed, and the new motor goes in...sort of. In spite of me modelling everything in my other Z3, the motor will not fit. See if you can spot why.

It's time to pull apart my electric car conversion so that it can get its new motor, battery box, and engine bay layout. In this episode the BMW hybrid battery modules come out, as do all the fluids from the electronic and motor cooling loops. Plus all the new conversion hardware gets a few coats of paint.

There's a lot of grunting because I was doing all this in a bit of a rush with a bad back. And there's a fair bit of belly on show as it was too hot for overalls in the garage. Sorry!

In the next episode, I'll finish the tear down and start fitting all the new hardware. Not long now until we can see whether all this has been worth it!

If you've not watched the rest of the series, my daughter and I converted this shabby BMW Z3 to electric during lockdown (as well as doing a lot of welding to get it through its MOT). We used one of the front motors from a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Though that has made for a very usable EV, it's a bit slow, so we're upgrading to the rear motor from the same car. This should give us more power and torque per amp, increasing acceleration and potentially extending range too.

At the same time we're making the engine bay layout much neater, reducing the weight in the adaptor plate and motor mounts, and fitting a battery box that sits lower and should improve both handling and safety.
